Diy Oilrubbed Bronze

Oil-rubbed bronze finishes have an elegant look.

Bring a softer, richer ambience to a room by changing its bright yellow brass fixtures to a darkened, oil-rubbed bronze finish. Often the bright, almost fake-looking yellow of "builder's brass" finishes on light and sink fixtures stand out too much in contrast with what is otherwise an understated and muted decor in the bath, kitchen, dining room and anywhere else lamps and overhead light fixtures play a prominent part of the decor. Make any brass fixture fit in better with its surroundings by replacing that brash finish and giving it an oil-rubbed bronze look.

Instructions

1. Dab a clean, soft cloth in lacquer remover and rub the remover all over the fixture to remove any clear protective finish from the brass fixture. Follow up with an all-over buffing with a piece of fine steel wool.

2. Dilute one part antiquing solution in 10 parts room temperature water and submerge the brass portions of the fixture into the mixture, using a ceramic or plastic bowl or tub. Agitate to remove any air bubbles that are attached to the fixture as these color differently and result in spotting.

3. Remove the fixture when it reaches the desired color and immediately rinse it under hot water.

4. Remove any powdery residue with a soft cloth and make sure the fixture is entirely and evenly dry to prevent uneven coloration.

5. Spray on a protective coat of clear paint to prevent the brass from continuing to age and to protect the new oil-rubbed bronze finish.
