Bathroom Ideas For Kids

Decorate a kids' bathroom with fun ideas that also provide them with the courage and ability to develop proper hygienic skills. This helps relieve the stress on parents who find themselves always at the door watching, supervising and teaching. Here children learn to conserve resources by turning water and lights off, controlling toilet paper use and more, while developing responsibility and independence.

Theme Decorating

Some children are terrified of bathrooms and, in some cases, designing the bathroom around the child's favorite cartoon or hobby makes transitioning into the "big kid" stage easier. Themed ideas for kids who are past this fear stage will help to personalize the space.

Department stores carry many bathroom sets that coordinate colors, fabrics and accessories together, some featuring fish, frogs and rubber duck designs that are popular for young children. For a more unique bathroom, consider painting murals of undersea life or jungle concepts. For a little girl wanting her own beauty space, decorate the bathroom in boutique chic with plenty of mirrors, salon-style lighting and kid-safe accessories.

Creating Kid-Friendly Ideas

Unless the child has his own bathroom, parents will need to consider decorating ideas that add convenience for little legs and tiny hands. Use slip-resistant step stools for kids to reach the countertops when brushing their teeth. If possible, install a small second sink at the child's height. If a second sink is impractical, consider mounting a small shelf at the child's level and allowing him to use the water from the bathtub. Store his toothbrush, toothpaste and rinse cup on the shelf. Attach a drawer or wire basket to hold his hairbrush and floss. Hang towel rods at a lower height for kids, and keep kid-friendly shampoos and soap on the lower shelves in the shower caddy. Also, buy a child-sized toilet seat to make potty training an easier and continuing habit.

Safety

A kid's bathroom decor must incorporate safety first before design and function. Install nightlights to make bathroom visits easier and less frightening during dark hours. Install slip-resistant mats or decals in the bathtub or shower stall to prevent slipping. Securely mount supportive handrails along bathtub walls to prevent falling. Cover the area directly outside of the tub or shower with a slip-resistant mat that soaks up water. Cabinets both low and high are dangerous grounds for children due to all the dangerous chemicals and medications kept in them. Install child safety latches on the cabinet doors and do not forget the toilets. As a rule, never leave children without supervision in the bathroom. Nearly 100 children drown each year from incidents involving bathtubs, toilets, spas and buckets.

When buying toiletries, purchase child-friendly toothpaste and tear-free shampoos and soaps. Flushable wipes ensure clean bottoms, and hand soap ensures clean hands. Be sure to teach proper hand-washing skills to reduce the risk of spreading bacteria and germs.
