About Modern Living Room Decor
Not only is the living room the space for entertainment and casual gathering, it is the focal point of the house. It is usually adjacent to the kitchen, or is part of the entry into the home. This is the area to show off modern decor with boldness, color and a sense of space.
Description
Modern decor is not only bold and bright, it is elegant with its straight lines. It is also comfortable and spacious. Geometric design is popular as well as black and white. Clutter is not part of modern decor, nor are small-sized collectibles. Modern decor is a statement with large pieces that each draw focus.
Color
Neutral or white walls are popular choices. Consider white or black furniture with neutral walls, or a bold red couch against a white wall. Stark painted walls in blue or green work, too. Neutral furniture can make a contrast without overdoing color. Another approach to color is through accents. Bright red pillows or a large blue vase add color, as does a piece of artwork behind a couch.
Furniture
Wooden furniture is usually either dark tones or blond tones. Woods tones are not mixed. The approach is bold. Black furniture works well, too. For the couch and chairs, leather or textured fabric are good choices. Modern pieces are streamlined, often with exposed legs. Overstuffed furniture, intricate patterns or skirted bottoms are not part of the modern look. Entertainment centers may be made of glass, metal or wood, with bookshelves with wide shelving for art displays, collections or glassware. For storage, closed units keep the look clean and uncluttered.
Accents and Lighting
Track, rail or cable lighting creates a bold, modern look. Lighting that accents a piece of art will add a high-end look. Lamps in black metal or straight lines add definition. Following the minimalist look, there should be no more than one piece of art on each wall. One wall is generally kept bare of pictures or other hangings to create an open and spacious look in the room. A sculpture on the floor is a popular choice. A few pillows of varied textures highlight the clean lines of seating.
Considerations
Wooden floors or tiled floors appear more spacious than a carpeted floor. Area rugs with a geometric designs help unify the look of the room. A wall with large blocks of color gives a modern and dramatic look. Windows should be bare of draperies, so natural light comes into the room. Remember, "less is more."
