A ceiling fan light kit adds overhead light to the room.
Almost anyone can install a light onto an existing ceiling fan. Most home improvement stores or big box stores will have a few models of lighting kits to choose from. The entire project takes less than 15 minutes, start to finish, and is a great way to add extra light to a room without cluttering bedside tables or overloading outlet space.
Instructions
1. Turn the power off at the circuit breaker. Simply turning off the wall switch is not sufficient. If your circuit breaker panel is not labeled this may require trial and error. Have a friend stand in the room with the ceiling fan and leave it running. When you flip the correct breaker, the motor will turn off and she can alert you.
2. Place a piece of masking tape or blue painter tape over the
3. Remove the bottom plate from the ceiling fan, exposing the wires within. On most modern ceiling fans there will be three wires; white, blue and green. On older models these wires may be white, black and green.
4. Twist together the exposed sections of the white wire from the ceiling fan and the white wire from the lighting kit. Screw a plastic wire nut, included in the lighting kit, down onto the exposed wires and wrap with electrical tape for added safety. Repeat this process with the blue or black wires from the ceiling fan and the black wire from the lighting kit and again with the green grounding wires.
5. Mount the lighting kit onto the ceiling fan using the included screws. The wires will fit neatly inside the lighting kit and will remain unseen once you screw the kit into place. Install the light bulbs and glass shades at this time as well.
6. Remove the masking tape from the circuit breaker and restore power to the room. Test the light.
