Remove Sheetrock From Above A Shower

Remove the drywall above your shower to repair small problems.

The sheetrock above a shower is subjected to high levels of humidity. If the sheetrock is not waterproof or compromised so the seal is broken, it may develop mold. Once sheetrock gets moldy, there's no safe way to eliminate the mold. It may persist below the surface and spread. Luckily, no matter what the reason, sheetrock is easy to remove with a few simple tools. Once it is gone, promptly replace it with new sheetrock before using the shower again.

Instructions

1. Place a tarp on the floor of the shower to catch any falling sheetrock. Make sure the tarp overlaps the adjacent wall by at least an inch or so to prevent any sheetrock from slipping underneath it. The sheetrock dust may clog the shower's pipes if it goes down the drain.

2. Put on a breathing mask, goggles, dust mask and work gloves.

3. Cut through the sheetrock with a utility knife. Sheetrock is roughly 1/2-inch thick, and you only need medium-firm pressure to cut through it. If you intend to remove the sheetrock from wall to wall, score the sheetrock along the crease where it meets the ceiling and the two adjacent walls. Then score it where it meets the top of the shower. If you intend to remove a smaller area, score the sheetrock to remove that section.

4. Remove the sheetrock inside the score lines. Hammer through the middle of the scored section to make a sizable hole. Use the claw end of the hammer to remove the sheetrock chunk by chunk.

5. Dust the edges of the sheetrock with a rag to remove any fine debris.

6. Lift the tarp carefully and throw the sheetrock debris away.
