Ideas To Design & Paint A Living Room

The living room is the one room in your house with a special status. As its name implies, it's where you do most of your living. So you want to make sure that this room expresses you and is comfortable for you more than any other room in your house. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about designing and painting your living room.

A Stripe Look

Benjamin Moore & Co. describes an idea to give your living room a modern look and to combine several of your favorite colors. It is a striped living room. The stripes can be horizontal to balance out high ceilings, but you could also use vertical stripes to visually heighten your walls.

For this look you will need to choose three colors, two light colors and one dark. You would paint the entire wall in the lightest color. Once the paint is dry you would then draw a line of where you want your second color to go in evenly spaced strips down the wall. Once you have your markings, place painter's tape down and go to work painting your stripes. Repeat this step for the third, darkest color. It is important to note that for the best results, you should make your darkest stripes narrower than the rest of the stripes and place them every two or three stripes instead of every other.

Think Modern with Wall Tattoos

One way to give your room a contemporary, modern look is through the use of paints and wall tattoos in bold colors. The basic concept here is to select one color of paint and an abstract wall tattoo to showcase in your living room. When picking out your paint, you should pick a bold color and don't be afraid to go for something dark, especially if your furniture is light-colored. Then you can pick out a wall tattoo to place right over the paint once it is dry. Center it on one wall to draw attention. (see Resources section)

A Word on Color

No matter what design idea you decide to go with, there are hundreds of paint colors to choose from. Deciding the right color is all about deciding the mood you want to set for the room. If you want to create an intensity and energy, a bright shade of yellow might be what you are looking for. If you choose to have your living room be more a place for relaxing, you are safe to go with a green, blue or a neutral gray, brown or tan. To make the room more visually stimulating, go for a red which ignites power.
