Bathroom Light Fixtures

About Bathroom Light Fixtures

Lighting is a key element to consider when designing your bathroom. Besides general lighting needs, such as overhead illumination, you will also need other lighting fixtures. Think about bathroom light fixtures that will be placed around mirrors and vanity areas. Applying makeup, shaving and other face care requires bright light. There are several different styles to choose from when selecting a bathroom lighting fixture. You can choose a fixture that holds one bulb or several. There are also fixtures available that can be mounted just about anywhere in your bathroom.

Energy Star Fixtures

For people interested in saving money on their power bill, or being more energy conscious, Energy Star fixtures would be right for you. Energy Star is a government rating given to light fixtures and other appliances that meet a certain criteria. For light fixtures that criteria includes using a quarter of the energy of traditional fixtures and distributing light more evenly. You can purchase an Energy Star wall sconce at any home improvement store. They come in a variety of styles to choose from.

Traditional Lighting

Traditional bathroom lighting fixtures feature three or four lights rowed together on a common electrical circuit. Traditional lighting fixtures usually have fluted glass globes reminiscent of small hurricane vase covers. These light fixtures can have globes facing up to cast wide light up or the globes facing down casting the light down. Traditional lighting fixtures, such as the tiered wall sconce, come in a variety of finishes like brass or pewter.

Rustic-Style Fixtures

Rustic-style fixtures are suitable for country or colonial-style homes such as cottages or cabins. Rustic-style fixtures may have a wood or simulated wood feature for the base. Plain black wrought iron would also give the rustic style the look it requires. Another decorative touch with the rustic-style fixture is to use cotton or woven lampshades rather than the traditional glass globes. Rustic-style fixtures come in single-hanging lamps or you can choose a sconce of several lights together.

Contemporary Fixtures

Contemporary bathroom light fixtures are simple, yet functional. Contemporary bathroom light fixtures can vary from art deco to a more minimalist style. These types of fixtures may have nickel-plated or matte-finished metals that give them a cool, clean look. Contemporary fixtures may also have an artistic lampshade style like frosted glass covers in unique shapes or sizes. Boxed-in lights are also popular choices for people wanting to use contemporary fixtures. Choose a single sconce for either side of your mirror or a row of lights on a single sconce. You'll find contemporary fixtures come in different colors, including white, red, black, silver and gold.

Bathbar Lighting

Bathbars are another type of bathroom light fixtures. A bathbar is a fixture that can be mounted on or above the mirrors of the bathroom. Mirrored lighting is bright and minimize shadows for faces that are reflected. Bathbars usually have more than four lights, sometimes even up to a dozen. Brass, chrome and even polished chrome are popular choices for bathbars. Bathbars usually have many low-wattage bulbs.
