Turn an unsightly outhouse into a work of art.
Turn an otherwise unpleasant sight into a whimsical work of art when you implement these easy decorating tips. Rather than being an eyesore, your outhouse bathroom will quickly become a lively conversation piece. Wow friends, family and passersby with your ingenuity and style. The decorations will start at the walkway with simple lighting, leading to the funky decor that adorns the exterior. Inside, a delightful vintage look will impress guests.
Instructions
1. Place a rooster weather vane on top of the outhouse.
Hang a wreath on the door to make it look more appealing. The wreath can consist of brightly colored silk daisies and greenery. Accent with miniature watering cans. Hang a large cowbell next to the door as a functional piece that replaces the need to knock. Glue a wooden moon and a wooden sun together and thread a piece of twine through the top. Write "open" on the sun in bold marker or paint. Write "in use" on the moon. Hang it from the door handle.
Nail vintage, metal signs on one side of the outhouse. On the other side, paint a faux window with old-fashioned lace curtains. If you lack the skills to create a freehand picture, you can use a simple window stencil. Use an old liquor crate in place of a box planter beneath the window mural. Position a row of potted silk flowers in the crate. Steer clear of fresh flowers, since the last thing you want to do is attract bees. Place a rooster weather vane on top of the outhouse.
2. Use a watering can in your outhouse decor.
Set a watering can filled with silk flowers on a corner shelf in the outhouse. Hang a cinnamon broom on the inside of the door. Cinnamon is a strong fragrance that will help to keep bad smells at bay. Replace the cinnamon broom every six to eight weeks. Install another hook from which to hang a basket of scented anti-bacterial gels and lotions.
3. Place a mirror on one of the interior walls. Decorate the mirror with flower garland. Place an old-fashioned shaving kit with the cup, brush and razor (dulled for safety) next to it on a shelf. Drape embroidered fingertip towels over a small towel rod beneath the mirror.
Behind the toilet hang framed comic strips and potty humor cartoons. Take old wood planks and paint them in bright colors. Write funny outhouse rules on each piece of wood, using chalk. Drill holes in each end of the planks and weave thin rope through them, connecting each piece of wood. Hang the list next to the framed jokes.
4. Hang battery-operated lanterns inside the outhouse on each side of the door so that people, upon entering, can simply press a button for instant lighting. Hang another lantern on the outside of the outhouse, next to the entrance. Line the walkway to the outhouse with solar-powered lights on stakes. These can be picked up on sale for as little as $2 each at many discount stores.
