Decide On Bathroom Lighting

Your choice of lighting will depend on the style of your bathroom.

With careful planning and a little creativity, you can choose lighting that will improve the overall look of your bathroom. While it is important to consider practicality in your bathroom lighting choices, you may also want a lighting option that will look good. The bathroom is one room in the home that does not tend to have a great deal of decorative elements, so selecting light fittings that will bring a touch of style to the space is a bonus.

Instructions

1. Making a list will keep your ideas organized.

Identify your bathroom lighting options by visiting the lighting section of department stores and specialist lighting stores. Make a list of styles you like best, and write down your favorite brands. Take pictures of lights that are displayed in the store on a digital camera and make a note of their dimensions; what works in a huge department store may not work in your small bathroom.

2. The Internet is a good resource for design ideas.

Look at your list and pictures again when you are back home in your bathroom, and identify what is going to work best. If you are designing your entire bathroom from scratch, you may want to read interior design magazines or view decorating websites for inspiration. What lighting you decide on will be affected by the style of your other bathroom fixtures and fittings. It is best to decide on your large bathroom fixtures, such as your bath or sink, first, and then choose lighting and other accessories to complement them.

3. A chandelier would be a surprising but elegant choice in a large bathroom.

Determine whether your bathroom lighting has to fulfill a specific function in the room. Do you want your lights to highlight a vanity or mirror? If so, spotlights or angled track lights are your best option. Do you have a large bathroom with little natural light? You might then consider a large pendant light in the center of the room. If your bathroom has low ceilings and not a lot of space for lighting, wall-mounted sconces or lantern-style lamps can help maximize the room's height and avoid over-cluttering.

4. Seek a second opinion. Show your partner or friends your photographs and ask what they think of your options.
