Make Decorative Rafters

Add a rustic touch to your home with decorative ceiling rafters.

Give your home rustic appeal by installing decorative rafters. Whether your home is modern or colonial, you can transform the interior into a rustic space with decorative rafters on the ceiling. Instead of purchasing decorative rafters, save money and put your stamp on your home design by creating the rafters yourself. With a little time and some basic supplies, you can create rafters that look as if they have been part of your home for ages.

Instructions

1. Measure your ceiling. Hold one end of the tape measure against one wall and pull it across the ceiling to the opposite wall to determine the length of the space where you intend to hang the rafters.

2. Purchase 2-by-4s that are equal to the measurement you took in step one. Purchase an amount of 2-by-4s that is equal to the amount of rafters you want to install in the space.

3. Bang three of the sides of each of the 2-by-4 with a hammer, a screwdriver and anything else you think will ding the wood, giving it a timeworn look. Create as many dings in the wood as you'd like.

4. Sand the surface of the 2-by-4s with a fine- to medium-grit sandpaper. Work with the grain of the wood to soften the edges of the dings and dents.

5. Stain the 2-by-4s. Choose a stain in a color that complements the color scheme of your decor. Apply the stain with a clean, dry paintbrush or a clean, dry cloth. Apply the stain in the direction of the grain of the wood. Use smooth, even strokes. Wipe a clean cloth over the surface of the wood to remove any excess stain. Allow the stain to dry completely.
