Small Bathroom Decor Ideas

Use Mirrors

Small bathrooms pose a special challenge when it comes to decorating. Space is already at a premium, and adding decorative touches often requires extra room. They key is to decorate the bathroom without taking up extra space.

Eliminate Clutter

Open up the area by removing clutter. A small bathroom simply cannot hold any unnecessary items. Remove everything that you do not use on a daily basis. The more clutter you have, the smaller the room will appear. Be ruthless and weed out anything you don't absolutely need to have on the counter top.

Color

Choose a color scheme for the room. Pastels or neutral colors make a small space look larger, but that doesn't mean it needs to be boring. Choose a light shade and accent it with a color that is a shade or two darker. Ice blue or green works well in a small bathroom.

Shower Curtain

Select a shower curtain with a small design or solid color that complements the walls. A fabric curtain gives a more luxurious appearance and provides depth to the room, while a plastic curtain creates a lighthearted, whimsical look.

Mirrors

Add a large mirror to reflect light and create the illusion of distance. This works especially well if the mirror reflects natural light from a window. Adding a full-length mirror to the door is not only practical, but it extends the size of the bathroom as well.

Replace the Hamper

Use a large basket to toss soiled towels into instead of a full-sized hamper. Be sure to purchase one with a lid to keep dirty laundry out of sight. Tucked into a tight corner, a basket is practical and saves space, too.

Pedestal Sink

Replace the lavatory with a pedestal sink to create the illusion of space. Although this does eliminate storage under the sink, the open space creates an airy affect. Store bathroom supplies in a cabinet outside the bathroom to save space.

Accessories

Keep accessories to a minimum. A small wastebasket, toothbrush holder and soap dish in matching color and design is all you really need to create a unified look without cluttering the room.

Towels

Display towels and face clothes rolled and tucked into a small basket. Coordinate colors for a sleek design that fits the decor of the room.

Lighting

Keep curtains and window treatments light and airy. Fabrics with light weaves or a lacy design allow natural light to penetrate while still providing privacy. Add recessed lighting to create the illusion of space.
