Remove And Repaint A Popcorn Ceiling

Popcorn ceilings have for the most part gone out of style and been replaced with flat-surface ceilings. These are easier to install than the popcorn style, can be painted easily to match decor and be re-painted without worry of damage. Popcorn ceilings are not this easy to work with. If you would like to remove the popcorn in your home, it is possible with a bit of hard work, and the end result is worth it.

Instructions

1. Scrape off a sample of the ceiling and have it tested for asbestos. If you have a newer home, this is not normally an issue. You will need to find a testing lab to analyze it. If it comes back positive, then it is best if you hire a professional to remove the popcorn ceiling because it is extremely hazardous.

2. Take off coverings to light fixtures. These fixtures sometimes hide portions of the ceiling underneath, and you want to make sure you get it all. Turn off power to the room you are working in to protect yourself from unwanted shock.

3. Tape plastic over walls and flooring. This will protect the room from the mess you are about to create. Lay down resin paper on top of the floor plastic to keep from tearing the plastic.

4. Apply water to a small area of the ceiling with a spray bottle. Make sure the ceiling is damp, but not soggy. Too much moisture could damage the area underneath.

5. Scrape the ceiling with a flat edge to remove the popcorn. Take care not to scrape too hard or make any deep marks in the ceiling. If you do, you will need to fill the dents with putty before painting. Continue the process and work your way across the ceiling until all the popcorn is removed.

6. Apply putty to any dents in the ceiling and allow them to dry. Once dry, sand them flush to the ceiling. Take the opportunity to make any other repairs such as applying new joint tape and covering it with joint compound. Once dry, sand the areas smooth.

7. Paint the ceiling with your paint of choice. You might consider applying a primer first to have a solid-colored surface to start with.
