Insulate The Ceiling Above A Garage

Insulate the Ceiling Above a Garage

You insulate a ceiling above a garage for two main reasons. If there are heating and cooling ducts running to the garage, you want to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The second reason is to help keep the rooms above the garage warm in the winter and cool in the summer. When you properly insulate a ceiling above a garage, it can significantly cut down on your heating and cooling bills.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and the width of the ceiling. This gives you the square footage of the ceiling and tells you how much insulation you need to purchase.

2. Measure the width in between the ceiling trusses. Do this to determine what width insulation you need to buy. Most standard trusses are about 24 inches apart.

3. Buy fiberglass batting insulation according to your measurements.

4. Measure and cut fiberglass insulation to size. Place the straightedge ruler on top of the batting of the insulation. Press down firmly and cut with a utility knife.

5. Prepare for installation. Place the stepladder underneath the ceiling where you are installing the first piece of insulation. Put on a dust mask to prevent inhalation of small fiberglass insulation particles.

6. Install insulation. Hold the insulation with paper backing facing down toward you. Staple the edges of the batting to the insides of the ceiling trusses. Move the stepladder as needed.

7. Repeat the process until you insulate the entire ceiling.
