Foyer Chandelier Ideas

A traditional chandelier suits a period home.

A foyer chandelier is one of the first home adornments that you and your guests will encounter when entering your home. Use it to make a statement, indicate what style of decor the rest of the home will feature and create ambient or task lighting in the foyer area.

Size

Chandeliers come in all shapes and sizes and it is important to choose one that will have a impact in the foyer without overpowering it, particularly if the chandelier has many bulbs. The bottom of the chandelier shouldn't be less than 7 feet from the ground. Add the length and width of the floor space together (in feet), and use this measurement as your guide (in inches) for the chandelier's diameter.

Position

If you have a two-story foyer with a window, center the chandelier in the window so that it can be seen from the street. If your foyer is single-story, center the chandelier with the door. A symmetrical interior creates harmony, especially in traditional interiors.

Style

Generally, a simple chandelier suits a modern home, while an ornate chandelier suits an older period property. Don't be constrained by slavishly following the style of the property, however. A carriage lamp creates a traditional but simple look, while a crystal chandelier bounces light around. A candelabra -- a chandelier with real candles -- looks ecclesiastical, but should be used with caution due to fire risk. Venetian chandeliers are perfect for a feminine space.

Color

Clear crystal chandeliers can look elegant, but you can also introduce color, either through colored crystal or colored shades. Pick a color that ties in with your decor, or choose contrasting colors to make a statement. Contrast the outer color of the shade with the lining for an elegant effect. A gold lining makes the light feel warm, and can add depth and sparkle.
