Install A Suspended Ceiling Around A Post

A suspended ceiling is an excellent method of concealing overhead items such as plumbing or HVAC duct work. The installation of the ceiling is normally very straight forward with only a few minor exceptions. One such area is a post which is to be surrounded by the ceiling tiles.

Instructions

1. Take very careful measurements and mark all four sides of the post at the same height as the railings on the exterior walls. Measure from the floor up, being certain to double check your measurements before making your mark. Measure the width of the post and cut two pieces of "L" bracket to that length. Cut two additional "L" bracket pieces 2 inches longer than the first two pieces. Secure these to the post along the mark. Use at least two screws in each piece of bracket to keep it from swiveling. Alternate the shorter and longer pieces so when you are finished you have a smooth square bracket around the post.

2. Measure the distance from the post to each of the long "T" brackets running along either side. Cut two pieces of "T" bracket to these measurements, being careful to get a smooth straight cut. Insert these in the gaps between the post and the outer "T" brackets. Be certain to center them on the post for a neat and orderly look. Make certain all the brackets are firmly in place before moving on.

3. Cut two pieces of ceiling tile to the dimensions of the new openings. Take very close measurements and transcribe them onto the tile. When cut, these tile should fit snugly into the pockets you have created with the brackets. It is possible to cut the pieces to fit and not have the two extra "T" brackets, but this could allow sagging along the sea. The "T" brackets will look natural around the post and will be all but invisible and will provide needed support to the tiles.
