Install Paneling In A Bathroom

Paneling your bathroom is a quick route to a new look.

Bathroom walls are exposed to far more wear and tear than other rooms of the home. Steam and moisture fill these usually small, enclosed rooms to attack the ceiling, walls, and even the very structure beneath. The greatest defense against damage to your bathroom is properly installed wall coverings. One of the easiest and most effective barriers against moisture in the bathroom is vinyl paneling. Covering your bathroom with vinyl paneling takes only a few tools and a bit of know-how.

Instructions

1. Remove all of the switch and receptacle covers with your screwdriver. Place the covers into the shoebox along with the retaining screws

2. Measure the wall closest to the bathroom door and begin placing paneling in this area. Mark your measurements onto the back of the vinyl boards, remembering that you are working in reverse since this is the back of the board. Make your pencil marks on the back of the boards as dark as necessary. Get the proper angle for your cutout marks with the speed square.

3. Cut the vinyl paneling with your jigsaw. Make your marks, start your saw, and follow the lines. Cutting out holes for outlets and switches requires drilling a hole into each corner of the markings and cutting between the drill holes with your saw.

4. Load your caulk gun with construction adhesive. Place vertical and horizontal lines of adhesive onto the wall with the caulk gun. Space the lines so that they form 6-inch squares on the wall. Press the wallboard onto the wall, apply pressure all over the board to ensure a tight bond, and make sure your cutouts are in place. Continue placing boards onto the walls, working your way around the room. Keep the edges of the vinyl boards tight against each other as you go.

5. Replace the adhesive in the caulk gun with silicone. Apply caulk to every joint in the walls. Press the point of the tip of the caulk tube against the joint, pull the trigger, and pull the gun along the gap to fill the seam with caulk. Wipe the joint lightly with a wet rag to smooth the surface and press the silicone into the gap for a sure seal.
