Install A Ceiling Fan Between Joists

Ceiling fans keep your home comfortable.

One of the most popular means of circulating air in the home is a ceiling-mounted fan. Known for their quiet operation and attractiveness, ceiling fans have become a favorite accessory in homes everywhere. Ceiling fans often replace existing light fixtures and the lighting can be replaced by various lamp kits designed for use with ceiling fans. Support the ceiling fan installation by placing a cross member beam or expandable pre-fabricated brace between two ceiling joists.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electrical power at the circuit box that feeds the ceiling light fixture.

2. Remove the existing light fixture screws from the junction box with the appropriate screwdriver, either flat-tip or Phillips-head.

3. Remove the wires from the junction box. If the junction box is steel, the wiring may be secured by a wire clamp. Use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp screws to remove the wires.

4. Remove the screws that secure the junction box with a screwdriver. Some plastic boxes have a wing feature that extends over the top of the ceiling to secure the box. These wings can be drawn into the box with just a few turns of the wing screws. Once the wings are retracted, the junction box can be removed.

5. Place the expandable brace through the opening in the ceiling and center it over the hole. Grip the handle of the brace with one hand and twist it until contact is made between the two ceiling joists.

6. Pull the wiring through the wire coupling of the octagonal steel junction box and tighten the wire coupling clamp screws with a screwdriver. Install the box to the mounting bracket on the support brace and tighten the box mounting screws with a screwdriver.

7. Assemble and install the ceiling fan, following the manufacturer's directions.
