Painting near the ceiling and around baseboards are normally the two easiest places to make mistakes. This is called cut in work by painters. In order to get near the ceiling without hitting it, all you will need to do is go slowly and be patient. Following these simple steps should keep you from ruining your ceiling color.

Paint Walls Near A Ceiling
1. Pull off a strip of tape about 2 feet long. Place it slowly on the ceiling from the corner out toward the opposite wall. Push it down into place firmly to make sure no paint gets underneath and seeps through onto the ceiling. Your tape should abut the union of the ceiling and the wall without leaving a space between.
2. Add about a cup of paint to your small bowl. Dip your brush into the paint, concentrating the paint on the last half inch of the brush.
3. Place the brush in the corner flat against the wall and pull out toward the other end of the wall. You should have the edge of the brush resting on the painters tape so your paint goes to the edge of the ceiling without touching it. Paint the entire 2 foot length before moving on. You will need to brush paint 3 inches below the tape so that your roller does not accidentally hit the ceiling when finishing the rest of your wall.
4. Pull off another 2 foot section of tape and place onto the ceiling, beginning where the last piece of tape ended. You should only overlap if you have not painted the end of the last piece of tape. If you already painted the end of the tape and place more tape over the end, it could cause paint to seep underneath and reach the ceiling.
5. Repeat these steps until your entire ceiling has been painted around. Allow the tape to sit until the paint on it has dried completely. Now remove the tape gently beginning at the first place you painted. Pull away at an angle to avoid pulling paint off with your tape. Congratualtions, you just painted your wall without hitting your ceiling.
