Considering several design techniques before building your galley kitchen can help you achieve the best combination of these elements.
Galley Kitchen Basic Design
A galley kitchen, so called because it often resembles the kitchen on a ship, is defined by two units (counters) of the same length, running parallel to one another. Galley kitchens can also be U-shaped in design. The key to a galley kitchen that is functional and pleasing to look at is to have every inch of the design suit a use as well as add aesthetic value.
Focal Point
Choose a focal point that will occupy the front portion of your galley. This will be the point of the galley kitchen that connects the parallel counters. Consider using this section for your stove or sink. These are two features of your kitchen you will use often, and placing one of them in the center of the design allows you to work from a focal point and easily access the rest of your kitchen.
Space Consideration
Figure adequate spacing into your design, particularly if more than one person regularly uses the kitchen. An ample space between the two parallel counters is between 8 and 12 feet minimum. This allows for two or more people to work comfortably together when preparing meals. Use recessed areas for your appliances to help reduce loss of walkway space.
Flooring and Countertops
Two important features in any kitchen are the countertops and the flooring. In galley kitchens, these features become more important due to space constraints. Countertops should be about waist height and can be made out of any material that isn't slippery. Textured countertops work best. Flooring is much like thecountertops in a galley kitchen. Since you will be moving quickly in the small area, look for textured tile flooring or a textured stone-based floor that won't get slippery if you spill grease or other liquids. In such a limited space, you're likely to be turning sharply and moving quickly, which can become dangerous without proper traction.
Working Triangle
The working triangle in a galley kitchen consists of the stove, sink and refrigerator. Keep these elements within an 8-foot section to minimize walking distance when you are preparing food. Galley kitchens are meant to be efficient, not only on saving space, but for the energy spent cooking. Making the working triangle any larger than 8 feet will require too much walking, which will reduce efficiency.
Lighting Considerations
Use natural lightning when possible. This means adding a window to your kitchen. A window placed at the front of your galley work triangle is best. For times when natural lighting isn't good, install track lighting in the ceiling, preferably over each of the side counters.
