Build Suspended Cloud Ceilings

Acoustic tile is used in offices to soften and absorb background noise.

Installing a cloud ceiling is one method of reducing reflected noise in a large space. The acoustic baffles are suspended horizontally from the ceiling by cables. A variety of sizes and shapes are available from several manufacturers. However, if you only need a small cloud ceiling over your desk or sofa, you can build a custom installation with acoustic tile, corkscrew hangers and ceiling hooks.

Instructions

1. Place the acoustic tile on a flat surface with the 4-foot side facing you. Mark a spot 6 inches from each end and centered on the 2-inch side of the panel.

2. Tip the tile onto its side. Insert a corkscrew hanger into the dot on the tile. Pressing lightly, twist the corkscrew all the way down until the top coil touches the tile. Repeat at the second dot, then turn the tile over and repeat the process.

3. Insert picture wire into the corkscrew hanger. Twist the wire to secure it to the hanger with needle-nose pliers. Attach a 4-foot length of picture wire to the second hanger on the same side of the tile.

4. Attach picture wire to the hangers on the opposite side of the tile so they are parallel. Adjust the length until the tile hangs at the desired distance from the midpoint of the wires. Twist the ends together to secure the wires in place.

5. Install two ceiling hooks above your desk or sofa that are 3 feet apart and centered on the furniture. Twist the hooks into the ceiling until the bases are firmly set against the drywall.

6. Lift the tile into place and hang the wire over the ceiling hooks.
