Decorating a room with low ceilings can be a home-decor adventure; easy access to the ceiling and its prominent role in the room gives you all sorts of options not available in traditional rooms. Whether the room has a low, flat ceiling or, as is more common, the ceiling slants with the slope of the roof, take advantage of this unique design to decorate in an innovative and exciting fashion.
Instructions
1. Position your bed. If your room has slanted ceilings, position the bed in a corner under the eaves of the house. If the room simply has low ceilings, make it appear slightly less small by placing the bed sticking out from the center of a wall--beneath a window, if possible.
2. Hang curtains. Position a curtain rod so that instead of being right over the window frame, it is as near to the ceiling as possible. Hang sheer curtains on the rod to elongate the room's appearance. Pull the curtains back to either side of the window with thin ribbons. Screw cup hooks into the wall on the lower half of the window, and tie the ribbons on the hooks.
3. Hang mirrors to make the room appear larger. Hang mirrors long-ways so that the width of the mirror is parallel with the ceiling. Stagger the mirrors, rather than hanging them in a row. Arrange the mirrors along one or two adjoining walls, rather than scattering them around the room. Place a mirror across from the window to bring daylight into the room.
4. Use scarves to accent a sloping ceiling. Drape a sheer panel from the point of the roof down to the intersection with the wall to create an illusion of depth. Use thumbtacks to position the scarf so that it billows across the slanting ceiling, but does not interfere with the usable space below.
5. Avoid fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lights will make the room feel clinical, especially if the ceilings are already low and confining. Position floor lamps in opposite corners of the room to shine light upward.
