Build A Floor Lamp Table

Remove the light bulb from its socket before starting your lamp modification.

Tray table floor lamps accomplish a lot while taking up little floor space. This space-saving lamp style removes the need to place a table lamp on top of an end table, since the tray or table top is already attached to the center of the lamp's post. If you are attracted to this type of lighting, you don't have to purchase a lamp; you can make your own for a fraction of the retail price.

Instructions

1. Unplug your lamp and wait for the bulb to cool before untwisting it from the socket. Remove the shade as well as any other removable pieces.

2. Pull apart or twist off the base at the end of the lamp's long post. Measure the diameter of the hole at the end of the post.

3. Cut a hole in the center of you wooden disc using your hole saw. The hole's diameter should match the lamp's post's diameter.

4. Paint your wooden disk to match or complement the floor lamp's color or design. Allow your paint job to dry before adding a polyurethane coat. Allow the coat to dry.

5. Place the rod on top of your wood block and attach it firmly using a small vise or tape. Oil the rod to help keep the drill bit cool and to increase lubrication. Drill two holes through opposite sides of the metal rod.

6. Secure your lamp's post to prepare it for drilling. Use your scribe to mark two spots on opposite sides of the lamp's post just slightly below where you want the table to sit. Drill holes though these spots after oiling.

7. Thread the open end of your lamp's post through the disc's hole. The fit should be pretty tight. Push the disc, which is now your table top, up over the holes you drilled.

8. Feed your lamp's post's open end through the small rod, and push the rod all the way up the post until you reach the two holes you drilled in the post. Twist the rod until the holes align and then twist screws into the holes, securing the rod and the table in place on the lamp's post.

9. Reattach the lamp's base. Replace the lamp shade, light bulb and any other components you removed. Stand up the lamp and begin using your attached table for drinks or as a place for other small objects to rest.
