Wire A Shower Light

Light your shower with recessed lighting.

Even if you have a well-lit bathroom, a standalone shower can seem dark because of the small area surrounded by walls. The best way to take care of this problem is to wire a recessed shower light directly over your shower. If you have experience with electrical wiring, you can expect to complete your shower light installation in one afternoon. Shower light wiring tied into your light switch means with the flip of a switch, you no longer have a dark shower.

Instructions

1. Locate the bathroom power supply at your breaker box and turn off the power. Anytime you work with electrical wiring, the safest way to prevent electrical shock is by turning off the power that runs through the lines.

2. Stand in your shower and use a tape measure to find the center of your shower ceiling, which is where you will install the shower light. Using a small drill bit, drill a small pilot hole in the center of the ceiling then head up to the attic. Locate the pilot hole you drilled and position the can shower light so the pilot hole is in the center of the can. Trace around the edge of the light and then cut the drywall away along your traced line using a utility knife. Remove that section of ceiling and drop the can shower light in its position. Secure the light in place by fastening the brackets on the light fixture to the adjacent ceiling joists.

3. Take one Romex cable and run it from the location where you installed the recessed shower light in the ceiling to the location where you will install your light switch electrical box. Many people prefer the light switch for the light to be separate from the existing switch and in a location close to the shower. However, you can position the light switch in any location you desire.

4. Connect the wiring inside the Romex cable to your light switch. The black wire inside the Romex cable is your hot wire, and it will connect to the black wire inside the light switch. Pair the two wires together, insert them together into a wire nut and rotate the wire nut clockwise to connect the wiring together. Using the same technique, connect the two white wires together, which are the neutral wires, with wire nuts.

5. Separate the green wire inside the Romex cable, which is the ground wire. Wrap the green wire around the green screw inside your light switch and tighten the screw to hold the ground wire in place.

6. Use the enclosed screws to screw the light switch into the electrical box, and then install the face plate.

7. Access the recessed shower light in the ceiling to connect your wiring there. Connect the black hot wire from the Romex cable to the black hot wire in your light fixture using wire nuts, then connect the white wire from the Romex cable to the white wire in your light fixture together. Instead of connecting the green Romex cable wire to a green screw, connect it to the green wire in the light fixture using wire nuts for a secure ground connection.

8. Add a light bulb into the light fixture, turn on the circuit breaker that supplies power to your light fixture and turn on the light switch to use your new light.
