Shorten A Lamp Cord

You can easily shorten your lamp cord.

Whether for aesthetic reasons or to prevent a tripping hazard, shortening a lamp cord is an easy project to undertake. Best of all, you will only need to acquire one inexpensive electrical component. Once you do, the job will only take a few minutes to complete and will only require two common tools.

Instructions

1. Unplug the lamp. Use the tape measure to determine how much of the lamp cord you wish to remove. Once you arrive at the proper length, add about an inch back onto your original measurement. You'll insert this extra bit of cord length into the replacement plug.

2. Cut away the unneeded portion of the lamp cord with the wire cutters. Cut the cord squarely.

3. Remove the inner body from the outer shell of the two-piece replacement plug. Slip the end of the lamp cord into the slot in the outer shell of the two-piece replacement plug. Slide it up the cord a bit so it will not be in the way.

4. Swing open the pivoting prongs of the inner-body portion of the replacement plug. Slide the end of the lamp cord into the center slot. Push it in until it stops.

5. Press the prongs back down. They will hold the end of the lamp cord securely in place.

6. Slide the outer shell over the inner body of the replacement plug. Press it on until the inner body is completely encased. Plug your lamp back in.
