Remove Hardened Wall Paneling Glue

Wall paneling leaves behind hard to remove glue.

Paneling adhesive is easy to install, but can be difficult to remove. When your wall paneling was installed, it was typically glued to the wall with paneling adhesive. Many homeowners spend hours chipping away at the paneling glue with little to no success. In many cases, these homeowners also end up damaging the drywall on which the glue has hardened. Learning safely remove wall paneling will help you avoid spending a lot of time removing the glue, or fixing excessive damages caused by removal.

Instructions

1. Scrape the wall paneling adhesive with a paint scraper. This will give you a good indication of how difficult the glue will be to remove. Do not try to force the glue off the wall with the paint scraper as doing so could damage drywall more than necessary.

2. Apply heat to the hardened wall paneling glue with a heat gun. A blow dryer for hair may also work if the blow dryer has high heat settings.

3. Scrape the wall paneling adhesive with a paint scraper while the heat is being applied to the glue. The heat from the heat gun will soften the glue, making it easier to remove.

4. Repair the drywall with drywall mud. Place the mud on the wall with a putty knife. Cover nail holes and gouges that may have been made as you removed the glue from the wall. Permit the mud to dry completely.

5. Sand the drywall mud with fine grit sandpaper and a sanding block.
