Cabin Lighting Ideas

Explore different styles of lighting.

Lighting options for cabins can range from a rustic style to western and everything in between. Regardless of the style of cabin, lighting can enhance a room, creating not only functional use of space but beautiful decor as well. Explore the various styles of lighting to determine the best for your cabin.

Traditional Lanterns

Reproduction lanterns work well in cabin decor.

With a variety of styles and designs, traditional lanterns can work well in cabin decor. Early lanterns were usually made from frames made of wood or tinned sheet metal. They were brought to the New World by the earliest settlers to the Plymouth colony. They often had windows of translucent mica or oiled paper. Metal reflectors were also included to enhance the light source, which was generally a candle or an oil-soaked wick. Today, electric lanterns are available that mimic the look of these early lanterns. Reproductions such as these might include a wood frame with a pierced tin decoration. These lanterns can be wall mounted and used as wall sconces, hung as pendant lighting or used as table lamps; all suit a country-style cabin.

Western and Rustic

Antlers are a popular theme for cabin lighting.

For a western or rustic theme, look to the Old West and nature. Much western-themed lighting revolves around the use of horses, horseshoes, cowboys, coyotes and wolves. Bears and moose are also popular themes. Antlers are used in many light fixtures, providing a natural and structural look. Shades may be covered with a mica shade, a leather shade or a simple cloth shade in neutral tones. Look for wrought iron light fixtures or dark rubbed bronze. Most finishes will have a worn and rough appearance.

Tiffany Style

Tiffany style adds color to cabin lighting.

Tiffany-style lamps work well in cabin decor, adding a lot of color and texture. For a elegant look, choose a Tiffany-style light fixture for use over a dining table. Use a Tiffany-style floor lamp next to a reading chair or sofa.

Craftsman or Misson Style

Use Craftman or Mission style for cabin light fixtures.

Craftsman and Mission-style lighting reflects the outdoors with nature-inspired colors. With clean, crisp lines, Craftsman style adds a sophisticated flair to a cozy cabin. Mica shades are typical in this style, providing a diffused light source. Copper, verdigris and oil-rubbed bronze are popular metal finishes in the Craftsman or Mission style.
