Attach crown molding with thin finishing nails.
Crown molding consists of long, thin pieces of wood installed at the top of a wall where it meets the ceiling. Crown molding is often decorative and adds another architectural element to the room's decor. Once you have measured and cut each strip of crown molding to the length of the wall, you must install it. Using the proper fastening materials ensures the crown molding will last as long as the house.
Instructions
1. Place a ladder at one end of the wall near a corner and climb it. Turn on a stud finder and run it over the wall until it lights up. Place a pencil mark at the location where the light indicates a wall stud. Repeat along the length of the wall to locate all studs. When placing the marks, make them 2 to 3 inches down the wall so they are not covered by the crown molding.
2. Place a piece of crown molding up to the top of the wall, placing the top of the crown molding flush with the ceiling and the bottom of the crown molding flush with the wall. Push the molding as far into the corner as possible.
3. Place a nail gun up to the end of the crown molding and insert an 8d finishing nail 1/2 inch from the top of the crown molding at the location of a wall stud. Insert another finishing nail 1/2 inch from the bottom of the crown molding.
4. Repeat the process of inserting two nails at each wall stud location.
5. Apply a pea-sized amount of wood filler to each nail hole and smooth it over, using your finger.
6. Install a caulk tube into a caulk gun and run a 1/8-inch wide strip of caulk around the top of the
