Remove Foam Beams From A Ceiling

Removing faux wood (foam) beams from your ceiling is a fairly simple process. When reading the steps below, bear in mind that if you were to "look down the barrel" of an uninstalled foam beam, it will resemble a "U".

Instructions

1. The person who originally installed the beam would have first attached wooden blocks to the ceiling (probably 2-by-4 lumber) cut to the inner width of the "U" shaped beam. You need to locate the screws that are attaching the beam to these blocks. They will be located on the side of the beam no more than 1-1/4 inches from the ceiling. Unscrew the foam beam.

2. Pull down the foam beam. It is possible that the leading edge of the beam was also glued to the ceiling with a construction adhesive. Pulling the beam down with force is acceptable. Use a pry bar or claw hammer if necessary. You will have remnants of foam and adhesive remaining on the ceiling, but you can clean that up later.

3. Remove the wood blocks. These are screwed into ceiling joists or drywall anchors.

4. Remove all remnant glue and foam using your chisel and adhesive remover.

5. Repair any damaged drywall with drywall joint compound, sand and paint.
