50s Theme Birthday Ideas

Dance the night away.

Throw a birthday bash that rockets your guests back in time. Hosting a successful 50's party takes more than some golden oldies on the jukebox---though that will set the mood. Recreate the 1950's with theme-appropriate décor, food and atmosphere that will have everyone talking. Encourage your guests to dress their 50's best for the party.

Decorations

Choose colors that bring the era to mind. Teal, black and pink streamers and balloons will set the mood. Hang old records---make sure they aren't valuable---with string from the ceiling or mount them on the walls. Purchase metal advertising signs with a 50's feel from home stores or make your own with a photocopier and heavy paper.

Make cool record bowls from scratched and damaged records. Place a metal mixing bowl upside down on a cookie sheet. Set the record on top of the upside-down bowl. Place the cookie sheet, bowl and record into a preheated 200-degree oven. Bake for eight to 10 minutes. Put on pot holders and remove from oven. Pick up the record and flip the bowl over. Place the record inside the bowl and gently push it in so it molds to the shape. It will have a ruffled edge. Use your bowl for chips and other foods on your buffet table.

50's Diner

Turn your home into a retro diner. Place red and white checked tablecloths on the tables. Use stainless steel napkin holders and salt shakers as centerpieces. Hang a large banner on the door with the name of the diner. Think 50's when naming it; "Big Joe's" or "Frank's Diner" have a nice ring. Use the birthday person's name in the diner name.

Serve miniature hamburgers on bright teal plastic trays. Stick a frilled toothpick in each one to complete the look. Serve up milkshakes in oversize milkshake cups or stainless steel cups. Add large straws and a cherry on top. Instead of ice cream, serve root beer floats or chocolate malts.

Serve a hamburger cake decked with striped birthday candles. Make a two-layer round cake. Frost the bottom and top thirds to look like a bun. Stripe black, green and red frosting around the center to resemble the patty, lettuce and tomato. Sprinkle yellow or white candy jimmies on top as sesame seeds.

Sock Hop

Kids will be excited to attend a real 50's sock hop. Hang plenty of holiday lights around the room for ambiance and throw some Elvis or Buddy Holy on the jukebox.

Encourage the girls to wear skirts and the boys to wear jeans. Make small poodles out of felt and pin them to the girl's skirts so they can have their very own poodle skirt. Give the boys black combs just like the boys in the 50's always carried. Encourage everyone to kick off their shoes and dance away. Give out silly printed socks as favors to help encourage everybody.

Serve plenty of finger foods such as sandwiches, vegetables and dip. Make a record cake for the birthday celebration. Frost a round two-layer cake in black icing. Use a light color for the center label of the record. Instead of an album or artist's name on the label, write out the birthday person's name.
