A bathroom designed for a man
Most men prefer simple design when it comes to bathroom decorating. Simple, however, does not mean lacking in color, accents and style. Decorating to suit a man's everyday lifestyle is a good approach, and whether that style is rustic, sleek and classy, or simple and tidy, remember that keeping it simple and straightforward is always the best idea.
Towels and Curtains
Choose neutral colors, such as blues, tans, browns and blacks, for towels. Never use floral or feminine colors such as pinks, yellows or lilacs. Towels in solid colors work well, but if you prefer those with a design, try stripes, plaids or circles. Also, remember to choose large or extra-large towels to fit your man's larger frame.
Towel racks should be sturdy to hold the larger towels and constructed of wood, iron or stainless steel. If curtains are needed, stay away from frilly lace. A decorative wooden or colored blind with a top valance works well.
Lighting and Floors
Lighting is important in a man's bathroom, as shaving and general grooming require a good light source. Over-the-mirror or recessed lighting works great for his grooming needs, while an overhead light with a dimmer switch is a nice feature for those late-night bathroom trips.
The floor should be uncluttered and sensible. Ceramic tile in a light neutral tone or wood flooring looks great. If a rug or carpeting is desired, keep it simple and in the same color range as the towels.
Themes, Faucets and Accessories
Some of the decorating themes that men like include fishing, golf, Western, light houses, wild animals, boats and hunting, so once you've chosen one you can round out that look when adding the toothbrush holder and cup, soap dish and trash can.
A laundry basket hidden in a cabinet or a hamper with a lid that compliments the other accessories will help keep dirty clothes and towels from cluttering the floor.
Store extra toilet tissue in a cabinet close to the toilet.
Plants add comfort and style to the room, but flowering plants are a no-no. Ivy, cactus and split leaf palms work well .
Keep bath items to a minimum in the shower. Shampoo, conditioner and liquid or bar soap are usually sufficient for a man's needs.
