Install A Larger Ceiling Beam

Ceiling beams add ambiance.

Ceiling beams are a wonderful way to enhance any home decor design. Exposed beams add a texture and staggered depth to the ceiling and the color of the beam can often increase the appeal of the ceiling itself. Be sure to take your time when planning and installing your new ceiling structure. Get an assistant or two and be patient throughout the process. Ensuring all plans are accurate and materials are handled safely will help the project's success.

Instructions

1. Space the beams. This step, according to Faux Wood Beams, is the most critical part of the pre-installation process. Examine the ceiling for any physical impediments, such as air vents, sprinklers, fans or light fixtures, which may prevent installation. Place a level on the ceiling in various locations to make sure the ceiling itself is even. Large beams take require more uncluttered ceiling space than smaller beams.

2. Measure the width of the inside of the beam. Use this measurement to cut anchor blocks. If the width of the inside of the beam is 6 inches, for example, cut blocks that are 3 by 6 by 18 inches in shape and size. The amount of blocks you need will depend on the length of your ceiling.

3. Snap a chalk line on the ceiling to outline locations for screwing in the anchor blocks. These will be the blocks from which your large beam will hang.

4. Pre-drill holes in the anchor blocks. This ensures the blocks do not split during installation. Space one anchor block along the chalk line every 3.5 feet. Drill 4-inch wood screws into the anchor blocks to secure them to the ceiling.

5. Lift the beam with the help of an assistant into place over the anchor blocks. Hammer 2.5-inch finishing nails into the blocks; two nails per side on each anchor block. Repeat steps one through five for additional beams. Polyurethane beams can be used, and they are lighter in weight, but they are cumbersome.
