Dark spots on an acoustical ceiling typically are the result of water leaks coming from the roof or upstairs plumbing. Stains also occur from any object that accidentally bumps the ceiling, however. 4. Brush the primer onto the stained area of the acoustical ceiling, extending the primer out 2 to 3 inches beyond the stain. Depending on how deep the stipples are in the ceiling texture, you may need to dab the bottom of the bristles against the stain instead of using traditional brush strokes.
5. Wait until the primer dries completely and apply a second coat in the exact same manner.
