Decorate A Rustic Bathroom

Rustic decor is a popular trend partially because it allows for eclectic pieces that are more affordable but also because it blends well with other types of decor such as bohemian modern, shabby chic, cottage style, green design and cabin style. While the stereotype is that rustic equates with rickety, the truth is that rustic pieces can be sturdy, well-loved family heirlooms full of stories and character.

Instructions

1. Get inspired. Look at print and online magazines, especially Cottage Style and Sunset, that integrate rustic elements into design. One such trend is shabby chic, a popular style that throws together flea market treasures, embroidered fabrics and pieces with antiqued finishes to create a kind of funky luxury. American Indian-inspired decor is another popular option in rustic decor, featuring rough textures, bold colors and earth tones. Cabin and cottage style is about create intimate, warm interiors with details such as sheer curtains, artwork in mismatched frames, antique pieces and eye-catching bits of hardware.

2. Use color. Aim for a sun-faded beach cottage tone or a distressed faux finish. A classic rustic palette consists of earth tones with deep green or rusty red accents. Try different shades of brown, cream and gold to give the bathroom that log cabin look. Natural materials such as stone and wood are ideal in a rustic bathroom.

3. Consider space. A traditional rustic interior is more about simplicity rather than clutter, so edit belongings or invest in some storage to keep surfaces more spare-looking. The goal is to achieve a sense of balance between furnishings and empty space, to lend the room some tranquility. Some wooden shelves with cupboards, stained a dark brown or painted antique white, are a great way to conceal belongings and maintain the rustic look.

4. Accessorize the room. Because simplicity is key, only a few accessories are necessary. Look for items from nature such as a collection of round stones or a box filled with plantings of moss. Contrast textures by placing a thick-woven basket near a ceramic bowl, or a soft throw rug over a bare wooden floor. Wrought iron candle-holders, stacks of sand dollars or photographs in vintage frames are other rustic accessories.

5. Bring in the outdoors. Rustic decor is reminiscent of ski lodges, forest cabins and beach cottages so nature has a significant presence. Allow natural light to filter in through cafe curtains on a wrought-iron rod or sheer linens tacked up in the windowsill. Line a shelf with tiny vintage bottles for flowers or use a giant shell as a soap-holder. Create a simple arrangement of pine cones or colored rocks on a window sill.
