A flush trim router bit is used to follow a pattern to produce copies. The flush trim bit will come in two sizes--1/4- and 1/2-inch shafts. It also comes in several lengths, depending on your pattern and project's material thickness. The bit will have 1-2 collar bearings used to follow the pattern. All of these will determine how you set the height of the flush trim router bit.
Instructions
Router Table Setup
1. Put on safety glasses and hearing protection.
2. Move the fence out of the way. It will not be used in this operation.
3. Install the router bit into router and secure it tightly.
4. Install the starter pin in the router plate. This is a pin that you set your pattern against to start the cut.
5. Take your wood working pattern attached to your project material and set it next to the router bit on the router table. For router table applications, the bearing will be up, so that the pattern is on top and the work piece is setting on the table.
6. Raise or lower the router bit so that the bearing on the router bit is riding on the pattern and the cutting edge of the bit is also 1/8 inch into the pattern.
7. Lock the router in place and you are ready.
Hand Held Router Setup
8. Put on safety glasses and hearing protection.
9. Place your pattern and work piece on your work table. The pattern will be setting on the table and the work piece will be on top for this application.
10. Adjust the router bit so that the bearing on the router bit is riding on the pattern and the cutting edge of the bit is also 1/8 inch into the pattern.
11. Lock the router in place so that the bit can't move up or down. Your flush trim bit is now set for the right height to cut.
