Decorate A Ceiling With Pipes

Avoid an industrial look by concealing exposed pipes.

Exposed pipes on the ceiling work well for an industrial, minimalist decor, but if you are looking for a more welcoming, traditional appearance, you will want to cover up those pipes. Exposed pipes are most common in basement rooms with unfinished ceilings. Since, in many cases, moving the pipes is not a possibility, use a few decorating tricks to disguise them. Fortunately, this can be done inexpensively, and the results will be a big improvement over exposed, bare pipes.

Instructions

1. Paint the entire ceiling, including the pipes, a neutral color so the pipes blend in. If you want to make the pipes stand out as part of your decor, paint them a contrasting color.

2. Cover the entire ceiling with heavy fabric or thin plastic or bamboo blinds. You will need an assistant to hold the fabric in place while you use a nail gun to fasten it to the ceiling.

3. Install a dropped ceiling, if you have enough clearance. Suspend the ceiling and its frame low enough to cover all the pipes.

4. Build a soffit around the pipe with drywall. Then paint the entire ceiling to match.

5. Hang paper kites in interesting shapes and colors along the length of the pipe to conceal it.
