The Best Way To Cover Wood Paneling

Get rid of your gloomy wood paneling with one of these other options.

If you have a house with outdated wood paneling, take hope. A number of methods exist you can use to turn your gloomy walls into a bright and attractive part of your home without the work of having to tear out the paneling. Decide which method is best suited to your needs.

Instructions

Paint

1. Sand your walls to remove the varnish from your wood paneling. If you don’t like the thought of having to sand such a large area, you can also roll the walls with a chemical product that will remove the finish.

2. Wipe down the walls to remove any dust particles leftover from sanding. Sweep or vacuum the room to prevent dust from getting stirred up and sticking to the paint.

3. Prime your walls with one or two layers of primer. Use Kilz or another recommended brand.

4. Paint your paneling the desired color. Use a thick roller or a woolie painting tool so the grooves in the paneling are adequately covered.

Fill and Cover the Paneling

5. Remove the trim from the paneling. If you wish to reuse the trim, try painting it before you reinstall it, as this will save you a great deal of time.

6. Sand the paneling. Once again, if you prefer not to sand, use the chemical mentioned above.

7. Dust and vacuum the room so it is free from any dust leftover from sanding.

8. Apply two coats of primer to the paneling.

9. Fill the grooves in the wood paneling. Feel free to experiment with products to find which one works best for you. Because spackling can often shrink while it dries, you may want to use drywall tape instead.

10. Use a looped roller to apply Sheetrock brand drywall mud to your walls. Roll over the area continually until the texture is smooth like drywall. Let the walls dry overnight.

11. Prime the walls again. Without primer, the drywall mud will absorb the paint.

12. Paint the walls with your color choice. Apply two coats if necessary.

Paper Illusion

13. Purchase Paper Illusion brand wallpaper for your room according to the buying instructions at wallpaperillusions.com.

14. Wash your paneling with a cloth to remove any dirt or dust.

15. Tear the Paper Illusion paper into irregular pieces.

16. Dip the pieces one at a time into warm water.

17.Apply the paper randomly until the entire area is covered.
