Replace Vanity Lighting

Vanity lights are the light fixtures over sinks in the bathroom. They provide light while we look in the mirror for applying makeup or doing your hair. If you live in an older home your vanity lights might be dated. You can replace old vanity lights with new ones easily after you purchase a new light fixture to replace the old one.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the bathroom at the breaker box and check to make sure the power is really off by flipping the light switch in the bathroom on and off. Place a work light in the bathroom and turn it on to give yourself some light. You will have to plug the light into another power outlet with an extension cord.

2. Remove the light bulbs and faceplate from the wall with the screwdriver. Remove the mounting plate from the wall with the screwdriver as well.

3. Identify the electrical connections. Black or red is the hot wire, white is the neutral wire and copper or green is the ground wire.

4. Mount the new vanity light mount on the wall over the electrical outlet hole with the screwdrivers. Twist the wires with corresponding colors together. You will have to strip the wire back to the bare wire to twist them together. Remember to twist red or black to red or black, white-to-white and green or copper to green or copper. Put wire caps over the ends of the raw wires and tuck them into the wall recess.

5. Screw the vanity faceplate onto the wall and place light bulbs in the vanity light. Turn on the power at the breaker box.
