Update A Wood Wall

Wood paneling used to be the hip trend in the 1970s. But in today's home decorating world, it just looks tacky and outdated. You can replace the paneling with expensive drywall. But, there are several cheaper covering options that can make your walls look more modern. The easiest, most affordable approach is to paint your paneling. The difference created by painting paneled walls is dramatic, and it can brighten your décor.

Instructions

1. Begin by wiping down the paneling with a damp rag. This might bring out some hidden cracks and holes in the paneling. Use wood putty to fill these, so that you have a smooth surface to paint.

2. Get rid of the gloss. Wood paneling has a natural glossy shine. To ensure that your paint will bond to the surface, apply a liquid deglosser. This is a good alternative to sanding the entire room. Using a rag, apply the deglosser to the surface of the paneling. Allow the deglosser to dry for the amount of time recommended in the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Apply oil-based primer using a paintbrush and roller. Use the brush for getting in corners, and use the roller on the remaining wall. For wood paneling, an oil-based primer is best. It provides excellent stain coverage and bonds better than water-based primer.

4. Allow the primer to dry. Then apply the latex paint over the dry primer. Latex paint is preferable for wood application, because it helps prevent peeling and cracking. Be sure to choose a paint color that complements your home décor. Allow the base coat to dry completely before applying additional coats.
