Antiquing A Brass Chandelier

A shiny brass chandelier is antiquated.

Brass is a popular metal for home hardware, decor and light fixtures, such as chandeliers. New brass chandeliers appear shiny and bright. The natural antiquing processing takes several years to finish. However, you don't need to sit around and wait for the process or buy a new chandelier. If the antiquing process is just too slow for you, achieve the aged brass appearance with ordinary pantry supplies. Once antiquated, the chandelier will give your home an elegant, old-fashioned look.

Instructions

1. Turn the power off to the area of the house where the chandelier is located. Remove the chandelier from the ceiling by using a screwdriver to remove screws. Disconnect the wires while supporting the weight of the chandelier. Remove the lampshades and light bulbs.

2. Place the chandelier on a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area. Apply a lacquer remover to the entire surface of the chandelier with a solvent brush. Rub the lacquer remover into the brass with clean rags until the lacquer is removed. Protect your skin and eyes with latex gloves and safety goggles.

3. Combine 2 tablespoons of salt with 1 cup of vinegar in a bowl. Use clean rags to apply the solution to the chandelier.

4. Allow the solution to set on the chandelier overnight. Rinse the chandelier with water. Allow the chandelier to dry. Repeat the process if a more antiquated look is desired.

5. Reconnect the wires and hang the chandelier. Restore power to the light fixture.
