Mount Bathroom Light Fixtures

Mount Bathroom Light Fixtures

When re-designing your bathroom, one of the easiest things you can do to make a dramatic impact is to replace your bathroom light fixture. But not every light fixture is mounted the same. Therefore using the mounting materials that are packaged with your new light is always the best way to go.

Instructions

1. Turn off the light switch that controls the existing bathroom light fixture, or to be completely safe, turn off the breaker that powers the circuit. If you have a small bathroom with no windows, you may need a flashlight or another source of light.

2. Remove and disconnect the existing bathroom light fixture. Before undoing the wire connectors, use a touch-type voltage tester to make sure the hot line is dead.

3. With the old light fixture out of the way, use the tape measure to measure the distance between the 2 mounting bolts on the existing bracket. Then, measure the mounting holes on the back of the new bathroom fixture. If they match, simply make your wire connections and mount the new bathroom light fixture. But, if they don't match, as is usually the case, continue on to step 4.

4. Remove the old mounting bracket. Keep the 2 bolts that were used to secure the bracket to the box.

5. Hold the new mounting bracket up against the back of the new bathroom light fixture. Line up the mounting bracket with the holes on the fixture. Remove the bracket and thread 2 of the mounting bolts through the aligned holes on the bracket. Make sure that they are screwed in tight.

6. Hold the bracket up against the wall box and use your saved bolts to secure it into place. Use the torpedo level to make sure it is level before tightening it down. Also, be careful you don't crimp any wires between the box and the bracket.

7. Secure the fixture's ground wire to the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket and tighten it down. Make your wire connections, black to black and white to white in most cases, and secure them with the included wire connectors. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around the connectors where the wires meet the connector.

8. Tuck the wires back into the box and slide the fixture over the 2 mounting bolts. Double check that no wires are pinched between the wall and the fixture. Thread the nuts that came with your fixture over the mounting bolts to secure the bathroom fixture into place.

9. Double check for a level installation and then install the light bulbs and cover (if applicable).

10. Turn the breaker back on or turn the switch back on to test your new bathroom light fixture.
