Primitive Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Knotty pine wood fits in with your primitive kitchen decor.

Embrace the past by decorating your kitchen in a warm and comfortable primitive d cor. Showcase folk art collectibles, and select materials and accents that reflect handcrafted techniques. Deep background colors, twig or pine furniture and handmade accessories can blend together beautifully to create an inviting space for your family.

Woodsy Primitive Kitchen

Knotty pine cabinets, butcher block countertops and wide plank tongue and groove hardwood floors are ideas that fit into a primitive kitchen design. Arrange a plank style table with mismatched chairs in a breakfast nook. The colors of the pine floors and cabinets should not match; natural pine cabinets work well with deep cherry hardwood floors. The woodsy design speaks to the natural elements in a real primitive kitchen when cabinets, floors and furniture were all made by hand.

Themed Primitive Kitchen

Decorate a primitive kitchen in a theme prevalent in primitive art and d cor. Apples, farm animals, landscapes and dolls are all prominent elements of primitive design. Make copper or tin punched inserts for cabinet doors that fit your chosen theme. Tin punching is a decorative craft with a small learning curve. Cut metal foil slightly larger than the insert space, overlay a paper pattern and punch holes with a hammer and nails along the outline. Tin is a common metal used in primitive d cor, but copper will also work. Look for rolls of metal foil in most craft stores. Hang primitive style artwork, and select handmade linens to fit the theme. A variety of folk art along with hand embroidered doilies and table runners are available in most antique stores as well as from online retailers.

Primitive Colors and Accessories

A primitive color palate comes from nature; rich reds, vibrant blues and warm greens can work as the dominant color for your primitive kitchen. Pair the wall colors and handmade accessories for your kitchen to coordinate with the theme and/or selected woods in the design. For example, paint the walls rich red to pair with an apple theme and sky blue or deep green to fit with a rural landscape theme. Accent the primitive kitchen with homemade accessories, such as braided rugs, grunge candles and an old coffee can filled with silk wildflowers. Gingham curtains and linens need not match, but the colors should blend together pleasantly. Make your own by stenciling primitive theme designs on plain cotton fabric. You can also hang shutters inside to frame the window in lieu of curtains. Hang a quilt on a focal wall, and make your own wall art using pressed flowers and foliage framed on a background that pops against your wall color. A twig chandelier and simple metal accessories such as stars can enhance the feel of primitive kitchen decor.
