Refresh Wood Paneling

Refresh Wood Paneling

Wood paneling is an accent that can liven up a room. However, over time wood paneling becomes stained, dirty and faded. When this happens it is time to refresh it by either repainting or restraining, depending on the current condition of the wood. If you want to change the wood from paint to natural stain, then the paneling will need to be completely removed and new paneling installed instead of simply refreshed.

Instructions

Preparing the Paneling

1. Place the two sponges in their respective buckets and fill the buckets with warm water.

2. Place the instructed amount of detergent into one of buckets.

3. Pull the sponge from the detergent bucket and wring it out so that it is still wet, but will not drip.

4. Begin washing the paneling from the bottom to the top to avoid causing water streaks that can take longer to remove.

5. Allow the paneling to dry completely.

6. Sand the shine off of the paneling using a sanding block and 180-grit paper. If there are heavy globs of paint on the wood, then use an 80-grit sandpaper to remove them. Once the globs and shine are removed, the paneling is prepped for repainting or restaining.

Painting

7. Lay down paint cloths under the paneling to catch any drops.

8. Paint the paneling with a primer and allow it to dry. The primer will prevent any stains in the original paint from bleeding through onto the new paint.

9. Paint the paneling with one coat of the desired paint color and allow it to dry completely. Paint again with one more layer to ensure a vibrant color.

10. Clean up the painting supplies and allow the room to dry completely before moving any furniture against the paneling.

Staining

11. Paint on the new stain by working with the grain on the paneling. Allow the stain to dry for the instructed amount of time on the packaging.

12. Wipe any residual stain from the wood with a cloth wipe. You'll know you have removed the residue once the wood wipes completely clean.

13. Paint the wood with a high-gloss varnish to protect it from daily wear and tear. Apply the recommended amount of layers, according to the packaging, sanding in between each layer with 220-grit sandpaper.
