Decorate A Modern Bathroom

Contrast neutrals with bold colors in your modern bath.

Your modern bathroom should have a bold, colorful flair while remaining sleek and contemporary. The exact color and decor is up to you, but modern trends dictate bold accents paired with stylish neutrals to create an artistic look that doesn't feel overly heavy and overbearing. Bathrooms tend to be relatively small, so a bright accent wall or two offset by paler versions of the same color can give your bathroom a modern look without shrinking the space.

Instructions

1. Select an accent wall for your bathroom. This will become the focal point of your bath area, so choosing the wall with the vanity mirror is often best.

2. Paint the accent wall a bright, bold color, such as deep red or a vibrant moss green, or select a bold version of a neutral, such as charcoal gray or chocolate brown. Using well-stirred acrylic paint with a satin or eggshell finish, paint around all four edges of the accent wall with a paintbrush, then fill in with a roller.

3. Mask off the edges of the accent wall with masking tape once the paint is dry. Paint the remaining walls a lighter shade of your accent color, such as a sage green or wheat brown.

4. Measure up from the floor to the height you want a mirror to hang, and then drill holes for your hanging hardware to hang the mirror. If you are using drywall anchors, use a drill bit just large enough for the anchor, and then tap it into place with a hammer. Place a screw into the anchor and tighten it until there is just enough space for the mirror's hanging loop or bracket. Place the mirror on the screws and adjust it to hang straight. Mirrors placed opposite your main vanity mirror will create an appearance of depth, while a full-length mirror that reflects the largest open area in the bathroom will create the illusion of more space.

5. Install glass shelving wherever you need additional storage. Choose shelves that have metal floating brackets or stands in the same finish as your faucet hardware, such as bright chrome, brushed nickel or steel. Shelf installation will vary according to manufacturer's directions, so follow the included directions closely.

6. Place additional modern decor, such as trays, boxes and dishes featuring glass and metal, throughout the bathroom. Use metal-trimmed glass soap dispensers, metal towel racks and robe hooks (installed with anchors using the same process as the mirrors), and glass jars with scented reed diffusers to finish the decor.
