Design A Master Bath Suite

Take time to plan your new bathroom design to get the most from your budget.

Redesigning your bathroom is a great way to add a wow factor to your home. If you are thinking of selling your house, you should bear in mind that a badly decorated bathroom can lower the final sale price. Next to the kitchen your bathroom is one of the main rooms in a home that buyers remember. A great bathroom could be all the difference to making a sale. If you are not selling, redesigning a bathroom adds a personal touch to your home for you to enjoy.

Instructions

1. Measure the width and length of the bathroom using a tape measure. Measure the width and height of windows and doors and their position in the wall. Write all the measurements down in a pad for later reference.

2. Draw an outline of the bathroom on some graph paper scaled down from the measurements. You can use different scales depending on how accurate you want the plan to be. For instance you can use one square on the graph paper to represent an inch so 12 squares represents a foot.

3. Mark the location of all the bathroom services on the plan. This includes where taps are located, where the toilet is and where drainage pipes are. You should also mark down where any electrical services such as shaver point, light and light switch are.

4. Check that water pipes and drainage can be moved if you are thinking of changing the entire layout of the bathroom. Check if your water supply can provide enough pressure for a new shower or if you need a pump. Electrical supplies are easier to relocate. Ask a plumber or builder to give you some advice and an idea of how much it would cost to move these services.

5. Look at some designs of bathrooms you like. Go to showrooms and ask for brochures. They may have a free no obligation design service and a planner that will be able to advise you on what you can and cannot do in the space you have available.

6. Draw different designs on your graph paper incorporating the different suites and design features you have seen. Make several plans to see what will and will not fit in your bathroom making sure that access to each facility is unhindered.

7. Check that there is enough space surrounding each of the different units of your bathroom. A toilet must have enough space either side and in front of it so it can be used comfortably. Can you get in and out of the shower safely? Will you have enough room for the sink you like or will it block you from getting in and out of the bath tub?
