Undo Troublesome Ceiling Lights

An unwanted ceiling light can be removed and the hole covered in an hour.

Although ceiling lights can brighten homes and add welcome mood lighting, sometimes they can compromise the aesthetic of a home rather than enhance it. The direction of light may cast unwanted shadows or highlight unsightly features of a home in need of spot repairs. Fortunately, it is not difficult to undo or remove unwanted ceiling lights. Whether you have track lights, hanging lights, or another kind of lighting fixture, the removal process is much the same.

Instructions

Undo Ceiling Light With a Hole Cover

1. Turn off the light and power to the circuit it is on.

2. Remove the light fixture, using a screwdriver. Look for screws holding on canopies or lenses. Do not jerk the lighting fixture off the ceiling as it is still attached by the wires. Detach the lighting fixture wires from the ceiling wires and place the wire nuts over the ceiling wires. Push the ceiling wires into the electrical box in the ceiling.

3. Install the ceiling hole cover according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually by screwing the cover directly onto the bracket the lighting fixture is attached to or by installing a new bracket and attaching it to that.

Undo a Ceiling Light by Patching the Hole

4. Remove the ceiling light that you wish to undo.

5. Dust the hole to prepare it for patching.

6. Cover the hole with mesh tape.

7. Slather on spackle or drywall joint compound with a putty knife. Flatten and scrape off some excess spackle or compound. Let the compound dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

8. Sand the surface down so that it is level with the rest of the ceiling. Paint over this spot with the same color paint used on the ceiling, using a brush.
