Wire A Ceiling Light & Fan To Two Separate Receptacles

Ceiling Fan with Light Kit

Ceiling fans help move air and keep you home more comfortable in both winter and summer. A great many ceiling fans come complete with a lighting kit which will attach to the bottom of the fan and use the same electrical connections as the fan. It is possible to wire the fan so it will remain on when the light switch is in the off position. With slightly more work, both components can be wired to operate from independent wall switches.

Instructions

1. Mount the ceiling fan as instruction for the model you have purchased. The light kit will be mounted on the bottom of the fan and there will be wiring connections to be made. Normally these are quick connect clips but some models will have you use wire nuts. Connect these according to the instructions provided with your fan.

2. Locate the main wires for the ceiling fan. These will be at the top of the unit and should consist of a black wire, white wire, green wire, and blue wire. (The green wire is your ground and may be a bare copper wire.) The black wire is the "hot" or power, the white is your common or neutral. The blue wire is your "hot" wire for your light kit.

3. Turn off all power to the area by turning off the appropriate breaker. Install your wiring from the wall switches to the ceiling fan. You will have two sets of wires. Connect one set of wires to each of the switches. You will need to jump the power supply from the lower terminals on one switch to the second switch to provide power for both. Make certain to connect all ground wires and secure all power and commons below the terminal screws.

4. Connect all wires at the ceiling fan. For the switch which will be controlling the ceiling fan, connect the black wire coming from the switch to the black wire on the fan. Tie all three white wires together with a wire nut. Connect the black wire from the light switch to the blue wire. Secure all wires with wire nuts making certain no bare wires are showing.

5. Finish the installation of the ceiling fan and secure both switches in the switch box. When power is turned on you will have one switch to control the fan and a second to control the light.
