Ideas For Decorating A Ceiling

Decorated Ceiling

Ceilings are sometimes called the fifth wall. Ceilings often go ignored and unadorned, even though they are the first thing you see when you wake up. You may have even bought your house because of the high ceilings. Painting a ceiling is an added opportunity to use color in a room. Decorate your ceiling to highlight your room.

Beams

Wood beams or faux beams can be installed on a ceiling for color and interest. Beams can be found in traditional and rustic houses. For a garden theme consider putting a trellis on your ceiling. Beams can be painted the same color as the ceiling or a darker brown or black to make the architectural element pop.

Murals

You don't have to be an artist to have a ceiling mural. Paint the inside of a tray ceiling in a faux finish to look like clouds, a sunset or marble. Wallpaper border can also be used on the edge of a ceiling to look like trim. If you want a more elaborate mural, use stencils on canvas. It will be easier to work on the floor and then affix the finished pieces to the ceiling.

Painted Ceilings

Paint is an easy way to decorate a ceiling. Look on the paint chip that includes your wall color and go a few shades lighter to find a coordinating color. For a more adventurous room paint the ceiling a sky blue to simulate nature. Bring the ceiling color onto the walls for several inches. This will give the effect of a coved ceiling or act as faux crown molding. If you have a tray or step ceiling, show it off. Paint the highest part of the ceiling in a bold color.

Molding

Molding can add interest to a ceiling. Crown molding caps off the walls while drawing the eye upward. Trim can also be placed on the perimeter of the ceiling to create an elegant room or faux tray ceiling. If your room lacks architectural interest, molding can be an inexpensive fix.

Lighting

Rope lights can be added to a tray ceiling to illuminate and give softer lighting to the room. Think of the lighting fixture as the jewelry for the room. Choose an elaborate chandelier or interesting paper shade. Top it off with a ceiling medallion for added flair.

Fabric

Tenting a ceiling adds a dramatic, romantic element to the room. If you're not up for such an extensive project, consider using fabric on a smaller scale. Make use of a canopy bed and drape linen fabric over the top for a modern look.

Drop Ceilings

A drop ceiling may be your least favorite feature of the room. Install thin sheets of luan plywood for a sleek updated look. Replace old or outdated ceiling tiles with fresh new versions. Talk to a contractor about removing the drop ceiling.
