Living Room Designing Ideas

A living room is a place where you can enjoy time with your family and friends. It is a place where you can welcome guests and entertain them. Some homes have formal and informal living rooms. The former is always clean and ready for company, and the latter, also known as the family room, is where the family enjoys some family activities together such as watching TV, playing board games or reading books.

Old World Style

Create an Old World look to emanate a Renaissance feel. Use heavy materials such as carved woodwork, velvet drapes and hammered iron finishes. Use dark colors for the walls and add texture by using sponge or Venetian plaster. Use earth tones accented with deep purple or burgundy colors. Use earthen pots and statuary made of stones. Anchor the room with a room size area rug with dark earth and jewel tones.

Shabby Chic

Shabby chic is a relaxed style that makes use of crackled paint finishes and light colored furnishings. Use plenty of mismatched pillows to decorate the couch. If Old World looks heavy, rough and dark, the shabby chic looks light, soft and relaxing. Use slipcovers on the sofa and love seats. Cover your console table with table runner made of cotton fabric. Add photo frames painted with crackle paints. Paint the walls in light pastel colors such as cream or baby yellow. Use mismatched furnishings; they add more character to the shabby chic look. Decorate the room with flea market and garage sale finds. Embellish an old lampshade with ribbons and beads to give it more flair.

Ultra-Modern

Minimalist, clean lines and sleek look best describe an ultra modern design. Often considered cold by some people who are not into this type of design because it does not use a lot of clutter. Usually, modern or contemporary designs include minimal furnishings, art pieces and accessories. For this type of style, less is definitely more. Decorate the top of a glass coffee table with one coffee table book and an empty crystal bowl. Use lamps with crystal or glass bases. Choose furnishings made of simple lines, which means no carvings. The couch may have only one or two throw pillows, or none at all. Use bold wall colors such as lime green, dark orange, bright red or yellow. Hang an abstract painting on the focal wall to add visual impact.
