Make A Custom Chandelier Shade

Diffuse light with chandelier shades.

Instantly update your outdated chandelier with customized shades. Chandelier shades not only lend a modern traditional aesthetic to the hanging lighting fixtures, but also soften the chandelier’s lines and attractively diffuse its light. Purchase customizable chandelier shades at any craft store; these shades are covered with paper which pulls off to reveal a sticky surface to which fabric or decorative paper is easily adhered.

Instructions

1. Peel off the paper lining from each blank chandelier shade; set one piece of paper liner aside.

2. Lay the paper liner on top of a piece of fabric or decorative paper. Trace around the edges of the liner. Use the liner as a template several more times until you’ve drawn as many traced shapes as you have shades for covering.

3. Cut out the shapes. Affix each shape to one shade, good side up, using the tackiness already on the shade to adhere the fabric or paper.

4. Wrap your ribbon or trim around the top opening of a shade. Cut the ribbon or trim to this length. Cut several more ribbon or trim pieces to this exact length until you have as many pieces as shades.

5. Wrap your ribbon or trim around the bottom opening of a shade. Cut the trim or ribbon to that length and then cut additional pieces until you have enough pieces for all the shades.

6. Heat up your hot glue gun. Hot glue the ribbon and trim pieces to the top and bottom borders of the shade, hiding any unfinished paper or fabric edges.

7. Allow the glue to dry. Affix the chandelier shades to the tops of the faux candles on the chandelier.
