Suspended Ceiling Types

Suspended ceilings are often used in commercial buildings.

Suspended ceilings appear in new buildings and in renovation projects. Builder make them with a grid system suspended from the existing ceiling or roof using wire and metal strips. They lay tiles into the grid to hide exposed beams or wires and to provide acoustical and thermal improvement. Suspended ceilings are available in several types and you can customize them to suit the space requirements with a variety of tile materials.

Exposed Grid

Exposed grid suspended ceilings are simple to install and the most commonly used type. The ceiling tiles sit within a suspended grid system which consists of long strips of metal called mains. The mains connect to shorter strips called tees. The tiles, available in either 2 foot square or 2-by-4-foot sizes, sit within the grid created by the metal strips. The space between the tiles and the old ceiling or roof makes maintenance easy. The modular construction of exposed grid systems allows you to fit lights and vent grills easily.

Concealed Grid

The acoustical tiles used in a concealed grid suspended ceiling hide the grid system. This design gives an overall clean appearance, blocking the suspension components from view. This type of suspended ceiling still leaves a space above the tiles, which have grooves on the edges that fit over the metal mains and tees of the grid system to conceal them.

MF Plasterboard

MF plasterboard suspended ceilings are non load-bearing. They consist of a metal frame system that has plasterboard attached and seams taped and filled to give a larger finished look. You can paint or wallpaper the surface of these suspended ceilings.

Bandraster

Bandraster suspended ceilings consist of metal tees and mains made in several lengths, enabling you to create different patterns or designs. This type of suspended ceiling requires custom tiles cut to specialty sizes in order to fit the grid pattern. Bandraster suspended ceilings follow the building's design. For example, if the building is round, the tiles will follow the building's pattern in a curved shape. To prevent movement in the ceiling, the bracing for a bandraster ceiling fits into the ceiling structure.

Drywall

Suspended drywall ceilings do not require a metal grid. They use wires and hangers instead to support sheets of drywall that hang below the existing ceiling. This type of suspended ceiling is commonly used to create arches or ceiling structures but may provide other benefits such as lowering sound levels.

Tile Materials

Mineral fiber tiles are among the first types of tiles manufactured and are used to increase fire resistance, control sound levels and offer humidity resistance. Builders lay mineral fiber ceilings into an exposed suspension system also adapted them for use in a concealed ceiling system. Mineral wool tiles are lighter than mineral fiber but offer the same fire resistant and acoustical benefits.

Metal suspended ceiling systems are made of durable materials like steels and aluminum. They have a polyester powder coating to protect the metal against corrosion. The life span of a metal system is more than 25 years, making replacement cost low. Metal ceiling panels can be manufactured with openings for lights, smoke detectors and air vents.
